Melbourne earthquake – houses shake after powerful tremor rocks Australian city | The Sun
A POWERFUL earthquake rocked the centre of Melbourne today leaving houses shaking.
The quake struck at an estimated magnitude of 4.5 Richter, around 14 miles north of the city.
The tremor was recorded around 11.40pm local time (14.40 BST), with its epicenter north of St Albans, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
The Victoria State Emergency Service tweeted: "A magnitude-3.8 earthquake has been recorded with an epicentre near Sunbury, Victoria.
"The earthquake occurred at 11.41pm, with widespread felt reports. No injuries or damage have been recorded at this time."
Melbourne's residents took to social media to report the quake with many saying they were asleep when it happened.
One said: "In Melbourne CBD almost midnight. I could feel the shaking and heard sth irregular from 16th floor.
"I was sleeping then awaked unlike someone next door made a mess but it was not. It was the earthquake in Melbourne."
Another one wondered: "How do you get back to sleep after being woken up by an #earthquake."
Someone said: "Just felt an #earthquake in #Melbourne. Android prompted an altert on my phone about it just about the same time I felt."
