Melania Trump slammed for ‘playing the victim’ after violent US Capitol riots
Melania Trump has “blood on her hands” after the violent assault on the US Capitol building on January 6, says her former “BFF” Stephanie Winston Wolkoff.
Ms Wolkoff, a long-standing friend of Melania's since her modelling days, says that the riot, which caused five deaths, took place “at the direction of, and in coordination with” President Trump.
Melania was arranging crockery for a White House photoshoot while the mob attacked the seat of America’ government, and only five days later released a statement saying that she “absolutely” condemned the violence and called for “healing” ahead of her husband’s last day in office on January 20.
But Ms Wolkoff, one of the key planners for Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration, told the Daily Mail that Melania had only decided to issue her statement after widespread criticism of her silence about the riot. One of those criticisms came in an op-ed that Ms Wolkoff wrote in the Daily Beast.
“Melania played the victim role as she blamed others, including me,for attacking her.” wrote Ms Wolkoff. “It’s disappointing that she came out in response to my op-ed, instead of at her own volition.”
She added: “'I misjudged Melania's character and lack of moral compass, especially after reading how her ‘heart goes out to’ the same violent rioters Donald claimed to ‘love,'' before enticing them to walk down to the Capitol with him”
Melania’s 600-word statement seemed to have been rushed out, despite the five-day delay.
It was riddled with careless errors, even mis-spelling the name of the Air Force veteran who was shot dead by police as she broke into the Capitol.
Those spelling errors have been blamed on the sudden departures of two of Melania’s closest advisors – her chief of Staff Stephanie Grisham and social secretary Anna Cristina 'Rickie' Niceta – who both quit in disgust at Donald Trump’s apparent complicity in the deadly riot.
Ms Wolkoff is not the only Republican party insider rounding on Melania. Meghan McCain, daughter of one-rime Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, tweeted: “Five people died in a domestic terror attack on our own republic last week incited by her husband but Melania Trump is the victim in this?! Every morning I think I can't get more disgusted… “
A number of senior republicans, including Liz Cheney, representative for Wyoming, have said that they plan to vote with the Democrats to impeach the outgoing president.
For her part, Melania has shrugged off previous criticism of her and her husband from Ms Wolkoff. branding her “dishonest,” she wrote: "This is a woman who secretly recorded our phone calls, releasing portions from me that were out of context, then wrote a book of idle gossip trying to distort my character.”
