Meghan Markle struggled to ‘switch off American dream’ within Royal Family
Meghan Markle struggled “to be or say what she wanted” in the Royal Family and could not switch off the “American dream” idea, a royal commentator has said.
The former Suits actress stepped back as a senior royal in 2020 along with husband Prince Harry and have since cited one of the reasons a being they could not stand the restrictive nature of the Firm.
Julie Montagu Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, herself an American who married into the British aristocracy, believes Meghan's independence and determination were at odds with the royal way of life.
Speaking on Channel 5's Meghan at 40: The Climb To Power, she said: “You can’t really be anyone you want to be or do anything you want to do or say anything you want to say.
“Your duty is to the Queen and I think that it is very difficult for someone like Meghan to switch that American dream if you like, off, and be told right now you just have to do what we say … difficult.”
As an 11-year-old, Meghan stood up to corporate giant Procter & Gamble over what she saw as a sexist advert for washing-up liquid and managed to have it changed.
Royal pundit Emily Andrews said that determination to get what she wants has been there throughout her life.
“She was such a serious, solemn schoolgirl who was standing up for what she saw as right and I think that shaped a young Meghan to become the woman she is now,” said Emily.
“Someone who is used to getting what she wants, someone who is used to speaking out for what's wrong and speaking up for what's right.”
Meghan at 40: The Climb To Power airs at 9.30pm on Channel 5 tonight (July 24).
