Meghan Markle and Prince Harry ‘quit social media due to the hate they receive’

Almost exactly a year after stepping back from their roles as senior royals, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly also quit social media.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have now reportedly stepped back from using platforms such as Facebook and Twitter because of the "almost unsurvivable" amount of abuse they receive, according to The Times.

It is reported that the couple, who share son Archie, won't even use social media to promote their non-profit Archewell and instead want focus on their "progressive role" in the US.

A source, reported to be close to the couple, claims Meghan and Harry have "no plans" to use social media and it is "very unlikely" that they will ever return to platforms like Twitter or Facebook in any personal capacity.

Their last social media post appeared on their Instagram page on March 30, when they thanked their 10.4 million followers and asked them to look out for each other as the deadly coronavirus pandemic took hold.

They hinted at taking a leave from social media in their last Instagram post by saying "while you may not see us here, the work continues".

This also coincided with the Queen banning them from using "royal" in their branding after Megxit.

In a post to their Sussex Royal account, the couple wrote: "As we can all feel, the world at this moment seems extraordinarily fragile.

"Yet we are confident that every human being has the potential and opportunity to make a difference—as seen now across the globe, in our families, our communities and those on the front line—together we can lift each other up to realise the fullness of that promise.

"What’s most important right now is the health and wellbeing of everyone across the globe and finding solutions for the many issues that have presented themselves as a result of this pandemic.

"As we all find the part we are to play in this global shift and changing of habits, we are focusing this new chapter to understand how we can best contribute.

"While you may not see us here, the work continues.

"Thank you to this community – for the support, the inspiration and the shared commitment to the good in the world. We look forward to reconnecting with you soon. You’ve been great!

"Until then, please take good care of yourselves, and of one another."

Meghan previously spoke about being the "most trolled person in the world" on a podcast to mark World Mental Health Day.

During the chat, the Suits actor said: "I'm told that in 2019 I was the most trolled person in the entire world, male or female. Now, eight months of that I wasn't even visible, I was on maternity leave or with a baby.

"But what was able to just be manufactured and churned out, it's almost unsurvivable, that's so big, you can't think of what that feels like, because I don't care if you're 15 or 25, if people are saying things about you that aren't true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so damaging."
