Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have spoken out in the wake of Prince Philip's death.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a statement following the announcement he had died on Friday, aged 99.

On their Archewell website, they said: "Thank you for your service. You will be greatly missed."

The couple had not seen the Duke of Edinburgh, Harry's grandfather, in person since they left the UK in March 2020.

The Sussexes left Britain after revealing they were stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family.

They have not been back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But a source claimed Harry will want "nothing more" than to be with the Queen, 94, as she mourns her husband.

Buckingham Palace announced to the world the duke had died on Friday.

In a statement, the Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.

“Further announcements will be made in due course."

His death will now prompt a period of national mourning. It is understood that Harry is likely to attend his grandfather's funeral in what would be his to the UK in a year.

A source told DailyMail.com: “Harry will absolutely do his utmost to get back to the UK and be with his family.

“He will want nothing more than to be there for his family, and particularly his grandmother, during this awful time.

“Meghan is obviously pregnant so she will need to take advice from her doctors about whether it is safe for her to travel, but I think Harry will definitely go.”

Harry would have to quarantine for five days should he return to the UK from the US. He is likely to fly by private jet from his home near Los Angeles.

The Royal Family is currently divided with Harry and Meghan's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey deepening wounds.

There has been no word on whether heavily-pregnant Meghan would join her husband, but it is believed to be unlikely in the circumstances.

It is not known where Harry would stay in the UK or how long he would stay after the funeral.

It would be the first time the Duke of Sussex will have come face to face with his brother Prince William and dad Prince Charles since the Oprah interview aired in March, which featured a number of allegations about the royal family.

Harry and Philip were thought to be closed and were bonded by their military backgrounds with both men seeing active wartime service.

The late Philip served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War while his grandson undertook two tours in Afghanistan.
