Rabbit in the headlights! Mechanics discover live bunny trapped inside car’s engine after owner took it in for a check-up because dashboard’s lights kept flashing

• Mechanic David Hoskins, 60, first noticed bite marks underneath the bonnet
• The team at Hofmann’s garage in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, found a bunny
• It was found to be healthy at Henley vets and was released back into the wild

Mechanics discovered a live bunny rabbit trapped inside a car’s engine after the driver took it in for a check-up because a light on the dashboard kept flashing. 

David Hoskins, 60, was servicing a Toyota C-HR at Hofmann’s garage in Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire when he spotted bite marks underneath the bonnet.

After a closer inspection, the mechanics were surprised to find a terrified, but otherwise completely healthy, rabbit.

Amazingly the little animal is thought to have been stuck inside the car for some time, having climbed in there for warmth.

It has since been released back into the wild after being checked over at Henley Veterinary Centre where vets confirmed it was uninjured.

The group put the bunny in a box and took it to the vets. The animal was then released back into the wild

David said: ‘It was certainly our first rabbit, certainly a live one. We find rats and mice sometimes, but it must have been in there driving around for a little while. 

‘It was lucky it survived.’

He said they started to look inside the car when they saw some chewed wires in the engine. 

The team saw movement in the left-hand wing void and removed the wheel arch guard. 

David’s colleague, Joe Tomczyk said: ‘I’ve never seen anything like it.’ 

David added: ‘After looking into it further we found the rabbit staring back us while sitting on top of the inside of the front bumper

‘It was still alive and just looking at us. It was fine, I imagine it crawled up underneath the bonnet and got stuck in there.

‘It must have been very warm in there, but at least it didnt get mangled up in the machinery.’

It is not the first time mechanics in the UK have come across the small creatures in a car engine. 

In 2020, garage owner Gari Wyn Hones in Wales saw a pet rabbit’s nose twitching from behind the dashboard and it was happily returned to its owners. 

And in June a rabbit travelled 70 miles in a car engine from Camber Sands to Plumstead.
