McDonald’s has announced it is giving all emergency service staff and care workers free drinks as a thank you for their work during the coronavirus pandemic.

The major fast food chain has said it wants to thank, reward and support staff with free hot or cold drinks in its drive-thrus if they show their work pass.

A spokesman said: "We want to use our UK and Ireland footprint to thank, reward and support the health and care workers doing an incredible job in difficult and unprecedented times.

"This offer is a token of our appreciation for the tireless work that these professionals are carrying out in the communities in which we operate."

"From today we are offering free drinks for those workers in our restaurants and Drive Thrus, on sight of their work pass."

The offer will be continually reviewed and be offered as long as government guidance enables branches to stay open.

It comes after McDonald’s yesterday announced it was closing all its UK restaurants and only providing takeaway and drive-thru services.

It said customers will only be able to access takeaway meals from 5am today in a bid to stop the spread of the killer Covid-19 bug which has killed 71 people in the UK.

Announcing said that all its 1,300 UK sites are shutting down, McDonald’s UK CEO Paul Pomroy said: “Our restaurants will remain open for as long as it is safe to do so.

“In the last 24 hours it has become clear that we need to temporarily change our operations to ensure the wellbeing of our employees and customers consistent with the governments’ guidance on social distancing.

“Therefore from 5am tomorrow morning all restaurants will close seating areas and temporarily move to being takeaway, Drive Thru and McDelivery only.”

Mcdonald’s added that toilets and handwashing facilities will, however, remain open wherever possible but seating areas and children’s play areas will all be closed.

The move comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson pushed Britain closer to a lockdown on Monday, as he urged Brits to stay indoors.

He told people to try and work from home, urged people not to visit pubs, restaurants, theatres or cinemas, and advised those over 70 or with underlying health conditions to stay indoors for 12 weeks.
