New York semi-pro baseball team to change ‘River Pigs’ nickname after some residents complain

Don't ask anyone in Tupper Lake, New York, if it's acceptable to "pig out" at a barbecue — they may find it offensive.

Residents from the Adirondacks hollow complained enough about the semi-pro baseball team set to debut in the independent Empire Professional Baseball League next year that it is changing its initial nickname of "River Pigs."

Apparently, "pigs" was seen as demeaning by some residents.

"Many of the people who opposed the name were concerned that it would paint the town in a 'dirty' light," an editorial in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise read.

The term river pigs reflects the region's logging history. River pigs were the workers who broke up logjams on rivers.

On Thursday, despite having no alternative name, Tupper Lake Village Board trustee David Maroun posted on Facebook that the "River Pigs" would be changing the name. Fire chief Royce Cole said the village baseball committee would convene over the weekend to discuss options.

Tropical Storm Dorian forms in the Atlantic with sustained winds of 40 mph

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The fourth tropical storm of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season formed Saturday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Dorian is 725 miles east-southeast of Barbados. Maximum sustained winds were clocked at 40 mph. It was moving west at near 12 mph and is expected to continue this motion Saturday night. A turn toward the west-northwest is forecast Sunday through Tuesday.

Dorian could strengthen into a hurricane Tuesday, the NHC said.

Dennis Feltgen of the hurricane center said that it’s too early to tell exactly what path the storm will take. Residents of the central and northern Lesser Antilles should monitor the storm’s progress.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige On Spider-Man: “It Was Never Meant To Last Forever”

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has issued his first public comments about the Disney/Sony dispute over future Spider-Man film financing.

“I’m feeling about Spider-Man gratitude and joy,” Feige said, speaking at D23’s Entertainment Weekly booth. “We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man: two standalone films and three with the Avengers. It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”

This comes at a moment when the last two films Kevin Feige produced broke all-time records — Disney’s Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing film of all time, and Spider-Man: Far From Home this week surpassed the James Bond film Skyfall to become the all-time highest-grossing film for Sony Pictures

Sony is planning two more Spider-Man installments, though it is an open question whether those will include Jon Watts, director of the first two films guided creatively by Feige.
