The father of a 3-year-old boy who fatally shot himself turned himself in to Denver authorities on Monday, and an investigation is ongoing.

Manuel Lopez, 34, is being investigated for child abuse – negligently causing death, according to police.

Celina Duran, 39, the boy’s mother, was arrested Thursday as part of the same investigation into the boy’s death.

At around 5:20 p.m. April 17, the boy was taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. He died on April 22.

“At this stage of the investigation, it appears the shooting was accidental and self-inflicted,” police said in a news release.

The shooting happened in a parked vehicle in the 1700 block of South Pecos Street.

The Denver District Attorney’s Office will make the final determination regarding charges, if any, in the case. The arrest warrants remained sealed, police said.
