The Sporting Lisbon midfielder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer and United now appear in pole position to bring him in.

They are reportedly ready to offer £50million for the Portugal international with a £100,000 a week salary that works out as £5.5million a year.

Liverpool and Tottenham have also been in the hunt for the highly rated Fernandes who notched up 20 goals from 33 games last season.

Sporting are believed to be looking for a figure closer to £70million and it remains to be seen if a compromise can be found.

United are keen to reinforce this summer but are hampered by not having qualified for the Champions League.

They have lost Ander Herrera to Paris Saint Germain while Paul Pogba may also be on his way out of the club.

Both Real Madrid and Juventus have been strongly linked with the French midfielder.

Pogba admitted he is ready for “a new challenge somewhere else” after three years at United when the team has struggled.

They have been unable to compete for the league and next season won’t even be in the top European competition, the Champions League, having finished sixth in the table.
