Man uses stolen electric shopping cart to avoid DWI on drive to bar

A boozed-up bar hopper afraid of getting stopped for DWI stole an electric-powered shopping cart from a Walmart in Louisiana and drove it to another drinking hole – but now faces a felony charge in the theft, police said.

A deputy with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a bar in Houma about 12:30 a.m. Sunday after police received a complaint about someone driving up to the bar in the motorized cart, police said.

The deputy found the cart parked between two vehicles in the bar’s parking lot, more than half a mile from the Walmart.

The security guard at the joint identified Brice Kendall Williams, 32, of Denham Springs, as the driver of the cart, which is used by Walmart customers with disabilities.

“During his investigation the deputy learned that Williams had claimed he was at a different bar and believed he could get charged with DWI if he drove his own vehicle to the one on Corporate Drive, causing him to remove the cart from Walmart’s property,” police said in a statement.

Williams avoided being charged with drunken driving — but was hit with a felony charge of “unauthorized use of a moveable.”

His bond was set at $2,500.
