Man ties two lurchers outside Salford vet hospital and abandons them

Moment man abandons two lurchers outside an animal hospital – including one that had been separated from her puppies – as RSPCA launch urgent appeal to find them

  • CCTV showed two lurchers being abandoned outside a Salford animal hospital
  • One lurcher had recently given birth, while the other was traced to Newcastle

This is the moment a man tied two ‘sweet’ and ‘good-natured’ female lurchers to a railing outside an animal hospital before walking away.

Staff at the hospital in New Eccles Road eventually brought the animals indoors on the afternoon of Thursday, May 29, once it became clear they were abandoned.

A vet examined the duo and found one of them had very recently given birth and RSPCA investigators are extremely concerned for the welfare of her puppies, Manchester Evening News reports.

The white and tan wired-haired lurcher, who is thought to be around five years old, was still producing milk and bleeding down below – both signs she had been nursing.

The vet also found an old fracture on her left hind leg which had healed over.

The tan-coloured dog was microchipped to an address in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and also appeared to have old scarring. Her chip showed she is called Xena and is six years old. The RSPCA is investigating how she ended up in Salford.

RSPCA inspector Beth Fazackerley said: ‘We’re extremely concerned that there’s a litter of puppies out there who will have been separated from their mum at a very early age.

‘We don’t know whether they’re receiving the appropriate care they need at this vitally important time, if they’re ill or indeed what may have happened to them.

‘It’s also very distressing for mum to be away from her pups, who may not be physically or mentally strong enough to cope on their own without her.

‘Despite what’s happened to them, both dogs have got lovely temperaments.

‘They are very gentle and calm and we’ll look to place them with loving new owners in due course. We’re very keen to hear from anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV footage and we’d urge them to get in touch with us.’

The RSPCA has placed the lurchers at a private kennel where they are doing well. Anyone with information is advised to contact the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018.
