Man stabbed in chest near Greggs as city centre street ‘taped off by police’

A man in the West Midlands was stabbed in the chest near a city centre Greggs on Tuesday night, police have confirmed.

The victim was knifed close to the eatery on Smithford Way in Coventry, West Mids, CoventryLive reports.

A man in his 30s suffered serious injuries following the incident on Tuesday night. He was given trauma care on the scene by police officers and medical staff before being taken to hospital by ambulance for emergency care.

His condition is not life-threatening.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding and remains in custody.

In a statement, a spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We've arrested a man following a stabbing in Coventry city centre last night (15 Dec).

"A man in his 30s was stabbed in the chest during a confrontation with another man in Smithford Way, near West Orchards Shopping Centre, at around 9.30pm.

"He has been treated in hospital: his condition is not life-threatening or life-changing.

"Neighbourhood officers and response unit colleagues provided first aid. They quickly seized and examined CCTV and they recovered a knife.

"A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding and remains in custody."

Today, a spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 9.15pm to reports of a stabbing near Greggs in Coventry City Centre last night.

"An ambulance, paramedic officer, a BASICS emergency doctor and critical care paramedic attended.

"One man suffered serious injuries and was given trauma care on scene before being taken on blue lights to hospital for further emergency care."
