Man shot dead by deputies in El Paso County after he fired weapon at responders

An armed man was shot dead by El Paso County sheriff’s deputies Wednesday after he fired a weapon at deputies, police said.

At about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday deputies and the sheriff’s Behavioral Health Connect Unit, which includes a licensed health clinician, contacted a “suicidal” man in the area of Gollihar Road and Gollihar Court near Peyton, according to a Colorado Springs Police Department news release.

The man was first found in an open field and then went to a wooded ridgeline overlooking deputies, the release said. Attempts to deescalate the situation were made by phone calls over several hours.

“During these attempts, he fired his weapon at least one time at deputies,” the release stated.

Three deputies fired their duty weapons at least one time, according to the release.

Medical personnel, staged nearby, responded but the man died at the scene. No deputies were injured. The deputies who fired have been placed on administrative leave per the sheriff’s office policy.

An investigation, headed by Colorado Springs police, is ongoing.
