A frightened man has spoken up about a "very scary experience" where he believes he was stalked by a big cat while walking his dog.

The man was reportedly walking away from the centre of St Asaph in North Wales when he became aware a large creature about the size of a "border collie sheepdog".

According to a report logged with Puma Watch North Wale s (PWNW), which records sightings of large cats in the area, the incident happened at about 9.30am on Saturday (August 28), reports North Wales Live.

The local resident who was with his Jack Russell claims the big cat was watching them while lurking in a driveway as they strolled past but then started "following".

The member of the public was “very concerned” by the unnerving episode and decided to change their direction and begin heading back into town.

He told PWNW: "It was watching us walk past with our Jack Russel. The large cat was following us.

“We got very concerned so we crossed the road and walked back up Chester Street towards shops."

According to the PWNW a "large black cat" was spotted by a lady on the outskirts of St Asaph in June.

The witness said she saw the animal "jumping around in the long grass, running up and down in between the trees.”

According to PWNW, big cat sightings are usually reported in Snowdonia and the Clwydian hills, but have become more frequent in built-up areas in recent years.

It is thought that the reduced levels of human activity over the past year, due to lockdowns, may have encouraged big cats to move into more urban areas looking for food.

The website says that big cat populations in the UK are a result of a 1970s ban on owning cats as pets, and since then "small but significant populations have thrived."

PWNW encourages the public not to put themselves in any danger if they come into contact with the large cat-like animals but asks witnesses to report any potential sightings on the group's website.
