Man in 80s hit by car and dragged along road in Remembrance Day ‘hit and run’

An elderly man in his 80s has been knocked down by a car and dragged along a road in a suspected hit and run.

The victim was struck moments after a Remembrance event in Barnstaple, Devon, around 12.10pm.

He stopped a car and challenged the motorist about how fast he was driving.

The driver left the scene before turning around and colliding with the casualty.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: "The pedestrian sustained multiple cuts and bruises, and was treated at the scene for his injuries by paramedics.

"Officers attended and carried out an area search for the vehicle but it was not located."

Police are investigating and seeking the driver who was described as white, around 30, with dark hair.

His vehicle was described as a small black car which would have sustained wing mirror damage on the passenger side.

Last month, a man admitted causing the death of schoolgirl Melissa Tate, 10, in a hit-and-run crash.

Connor Marsden, 24, pleaded guilty to hitting Melissa in Hillsview Avenue in Kenton, Newcastle, on the evening of Wednesday September 25.

He is believed to have been travelling at 47mph on the road with a 20mph speed limit.

The youngster, who was described as "beautiful" by her family, was rushed to hospital but later died.

Appearing at Newcastle Crown Court, Marsden admitted causing her death by dangerous driving while uninsured and unlicensed.
