Man arrested over high country disappearance of campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay
Detectives have made an arrest over the disappearance of campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay, who vanished in Victoria’s high country in March last year.
Police confirmed a 55-year-old Caroline Springs man was arrested about 5.30pm on Monday. The man is yet to be interviewed by police and no charges have been laid.
Missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay.
On March 20 last year, Mr Hill and Ms Clay, aged in their 70s, vanished in Victoria’s high country.
The last contact they had with the outside world was through Mr Hill’s high-frequency radio as they set up camp in the Wonnangatta Valley, a secluded pocket of the Victorian Alpine National Park without mobile phone reception.
It took days for their burnt-out campsite to be reported to police.
Last month, Victorian police revealed a clue in the high-profile mystery, with investigators confirming more information about a car seen in the area at the time of their disappearance.
Missing persons squad detectives said they had narrowed down the vehicle to a five-door wagon, “GU” model Nissan Patrol Series 1, built between 1997 and 2001.
They received information from Australia’s Nissan Patrol community following an appeal for information.
Detectives said the matter remains ongoing and further information will be released when appropriate.
