Man arrested for ‘trying to abduct boy, 5, in front of horrified mum at park’

A 27-year-old man has been arrested following an alleged attempt to abduct a five-year-old boy in front of his mum at a park in London.

Police released an image of the suspect last week, and urged the public to come forward after a shaken mum reported that a man had picked up her son at a park and began to run away.

She then confronted the individual who eventually put the little boy, a five-year-old, down and fled the scene at Northala Fields in Northolt, London.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said the man is now being "transported into police custody."

The Met said: "The 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted abduction of a child at an address in Surrey on Saturday, 23 January.

"He is being transported to police custody in London.

"At approximately 2.30pm on Thursday, 7 January, a man is alleged to have approached a five-year-old boy in Northala Fields, Northolt, before picking him up and running a short distance away.

"He was confronted by the boy's mother and put the child down – the boy was unharmed."

Detectives released CCTV footage of the alleged individual on January 15, and described him as having a pale complexion, a slim muscular build and possibly a moustache.

Constable Ashleigh Nelson said: "Incidents of this nature are very rare but I understand the concern it may have caused in the local community.

"I want to reassure people we are doing everything we can to find out who is responsible."

At the time, Mr Nelson added: "I would appeal to anyone who has mobile phone or dashcam footage of the suspect, which may assist with identifying him, to get in contact as soon as possible."
