Man arrested for bringing explosives to Stony Brook Hospital

A man was arrested for taking three explosive devices to a Long Island hospital Tuesday night, police said.

Robert Roden, 33, was first stopped by Stony Brook University police after a hospital security guard reported a suspicious man inside the emergency room just after 9 p.m., cops said.

University officers found a suspicious package inside Roden’s backpack and called the county police department for assistance, authorities said.

Two floors of the hospital were evacuated for several hours Tuesday night over the scare.

Wednesday morning, Stony Brook University Police Chief Robert Lenahan deemed the package safe.

“The man’s backpack was searched, rendered safe and items removed for further analysis. University Hospital has resumed normal operations,” he said in a statement to Patch.com.

But hours later, Suffolk County police confirmed Roden had been carrying three real devices.

Authorities said they also found additional explosives at Roden’s Mastic Beach home.

Roden was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal contempt and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

His explosives are being examined by the FBI.
