Major 7.3 earthquake that could cause ‘serious damage’ hits near Jamaican coast

A strong earthquake has hit north of the Jamaican coast.

The 7.3 magnitude quake struck 72 miles northwest off the coast of Lucea in Jamaica.

Only 20 earthquakes of greater than 7 magnitude are experienced across the world every year.

It struck at a depth of around six miles, which means the range of its impact is likely to be limited.

There have been no reports of damage or of any victims.

Seismologist Dr Lucy Jones tweeted: "The M7.7 Jamaican quake produced sideways motion on the fault, so the tsunami risk is low. (Seafloor should move up to make tsunami.)

"But if I'm ever at the beach and feel strong shaking, I move to high ground. Downside is I lose a day at the beach. The upside could be my life."

Earlier today a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit at a depth of 10km about 60 miles to the east of Crete and 50 miles south of Rhodes.

The earthquake appears to be one of several which struck the region this afternoon.

A 5.6 magnitude tremor was felt in Akhisar in the west of Turkey.

This morning a slightly weaker earthquake hit in the same place.
