Maggots crawl around patient’s mouth as he lies on hospital bed in stomach-churning video
Abdul Ebrahim suffered a stroke in 2014 that left him immobile and unable to speak.
He was admitted to RK Khan Hospital in South Africa in May with a minor leg injury before being prescribed antibiotics and released.
His family were forced to take Abdul back to the hospital a month later after “his leg turned completely black and had become like jelly”.
Soon after he had his leg amputated for reasons unknown.
But his son Azaad noticed that during his father’s recovery, Abdul’s upper lip began to appear swollen.
And when taking a closer look, his son was greeted with a horrendous sight.
Video footage shows scores of maggots crawling underneath Abdul’s upper lip as he lay helpless in his hospital bed.
Azaad said: “Maggots were crawling and so active and moving. I lost my mind. I screamed.
“I couldn’t believe that no one attended to him. The first thing anyone does in the morning is to brush their teeth. They [the hospital] couldn’t even do that?
Abdul has since passed away from natural causes.
A dental expert told local media that maggots can flourish if there are flies around.
Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu, a member of the executive council of KwaZulu-Natal’s department of health, has called for a full investigation.
She said: “The reality of it is that it means, while he was under our care, and he had the challenges that he did, he also had an added discomfort of having to deal with the situation that he was faced with.
“I have requested the acting head of department that we should do a thorough investigation.”
In a statement, Rev Cyril Pillay, on behalf of the hospital board said: “I want to personally apologise to the family for the maggot infestation.
“This should not have happened in our institution, which is one of the busiest and most productive hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We call for an independent investigation to reveal the truth of this sad incident and if heads must roll, so be it.
“I sympathise with the bereaved family and seek justice for them also.
“I support their endeavours to get to the bottom of this.”
