Madeleine McCann conspiracy theorists made bonkers claim Maddie was born as part of a government cloning project

MADELEINE McCann conspiracy theorists claim the missing girl was born as part of a government cloning project, the family's spokesman has revealed.

Clarence Mitchell said the "ridiculous" suggestion is among many other absurd theories put to him in over a decade.

And thousands of people – including psychics –  have reported seeing Maddie in a dream, he told the Telegraph.

The ex BBC journalist has been handling Kate and Gerry McCanns' media dealings since their three-year-old daughter vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in May 2007.

In an interview with the Telegraph, he said: "One of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories I have heard was that Madeleine was born as the result of a government cloning project."

Mitchell also spoke of the criticism Kate, 51, and Gerry, 50 have faced over their parenting – and perceived role – in Maddie's disappearance.

He told the newspaper: "A lot of it is misinformed, misguided and based purely on assumptions or lack of knowledge. People deciding that the don't like the McCanns.

"People also assumed the worst. That [the McCanns] were getting drunk, that they were having fun and that they did not care about their children."

Maddie's whereabouts – or whether she's dead or alive – remains a mystery, despite a £12million police probe.

On May 3, 2007 Maddie had been left alone sleeping with her younger siblings while Kate, 51, and Gerry, 50,  were dining with pals in a nearby tapas restaurant in Praia da Luz, Algarve.

MADELEINE 'SEEN IN DREAMS'

Mitchell's comments come after a new Netflix series, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann was released two weeks ago, which the McCanns refused to take part in.

The eight-part series features 40 experts and key figures in the case, details how bungling cops wrongly tried to pin the blame on Kate and Gerry, and runs through the various theories on what happened to Maddie.

MORE FUNDING SOUGHT

It sensationally claims she may still be alive – and explains how Portugal is a prime target for traffickers because its location allows abducted children to be instantly taken overseas.

Yesterday, we revealed how the McCanns are being bombarded with hate mail from trolls in the wake of the Netflix documentary – as police wait for extra cash to continue the search.

The official campaign website, set up to help find Maddie and endorsed by Kate and Gerry, has monitored and deleted the vile abuse as it vows to stamp out online hate.

Kate and Gerry are anxiously waiting to find out if the Home Office will approve a fresh request by Scotland Yard for more money – a reported £150,000 – to continue the search for the next 12 months. Current funding for the Maddie investigation Operation Grange, which has so far cost the British taxpayer £11.75 million, runs out in just seven days at the end of the month.

We previously told how a British gran who saw a "scruffy weirdo" lurking near the apartment is convinced he was a sex gang's lookout man.
