M2 CLOSED with cars IN FLAMES – as weather causes travel chaos

The road has been closed in both directions between junction 6 for Faversham and junction 7 for Brenley Corner after the incident around 8am this morning.

Paramedics are treating three casualties at the scene and no one is believed to be trapped inside their vehicles.

A police spokesman said: “Police were called at 8am regarding a collision involving four vehicles on the Londonbound carriageway of the M2 between junctions 6 and 7.

“Officers, the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service are currently at the scene where both carriageways have been closed.

“Fire crews are extinguishing fires in three of the cars.

“Drivers may wish to consider alternative routes while emergency services are dealing with the incident.”

Temperatures plunged to as low as -2.9C in Sutton Downham, while snow began to fall on higher ground including Powys in Wales.

Met Office forecaster Luke Miall said: “It will cause some disruption for the morning commute in certain areas.

“There could be some minor road closures if it’s particularly bad over some of the higher routes.”

In County Durham, the fire service has warned of black ice and slush on the A1M near Chester-Le-Street, and said there had already been several accidents.

“Big variations in the weather up and down the country”

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern

A “sudden microburst” of hail and snow caused a 24-car motorway pile-up, Lancashire Police said on Wednesday morning.

The M55 was closed in both directions but no-one was seriously injured, the force said.

Showers and thunder have been forecast today across Scotland, Northern Ireland, and south-western areas in general.

Temperatures are predicted to struggle to get above 10 or 11C, but could feel as low as 7 or 8C in the wind and rain.

Meteorologist Aidan McGivern added: “Another cold start out there for virtually all of us, but depending on where you are it’s either cold, calm and frosty, or its cold, wet and windy.

“Big variations in the weather up and down the country, just as we’ve seen in the past few days.”

Outbreaks of rain will continue until the weekend, with drier and brighter conditions expected.

The weekend will feature drizzle in the east, with brighter spells in other parts of the country and conditions becoming warmer away from the east coast.
