M1 motorway closed in both directions after ‘serious crash’ involving 2 lorries
The M1 motorway has been shut in both directions this morning after a horror crash involving two lorries.
Both carriageways between junctions 13 and 12 for Milton Keynes and Flitwick have been closed following the collision.
Highways England has urged drivers to avoid the area, warning “this is likely to remain closed for some time”.
Traffic camera images from the scene shows the cab of one of the two lorries involved badly wracked with debris scattered on the road.
The trailer of the second lorry can also be seen hanging over the embankment of the carriageway.
The crash took place on the southbound carriageway, before emergency services soon closed the northbound side too.
Bedfordshire Police initially tweeted: "Emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious collision on the #southbound carriageway of the #M1.
"The road from J13 to J12 is currently closed and motorists are advised to seek an alternative route."
It later added shortly before 8am: "Further update: The #northbound carriageway of the #M1 has also now been closed from J12 to J13. We will update you as soon as we can."
Highways England also said on Twitter: "#M1 northbound J12 to J13 is also closed as a result of a serious road traffic collision.
"Please avoid the area. #Toddington #Brogborough #MiltonKeynes"
