Lottery winner suffers tragic curse after £13m turns home into drug den
A plumber who won almost £13m on a Powerball lottery suffered a spiral into drug use and a hedonistic lifestyle after landing his big windall.
Joshua Winslet pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying party drug MDMA, possessing a firearm without a licence and possessing ammunition for said firearm without a licence. Police raided the 27-year-old’s home on suspicion that drugs were being produced on the residence.
During the raid, officers found 2.27g of cocaine along with 27.3g of MDMA at Winselt’s home in New Port, Adelaide, Australia, on August 30, 2020. Along with this, local police found a Mauser handgun hidden in a manhole in the bathroom of the premises, along with ammunition for the firearm.
A court heard how the 27-year-old’s problems began when he won such a large sum on the lottery. Police found a picture of his winning ticket framed on the wall of his home which had become a “party house”, according to the defendant's lawyer David Edwardson QC.

Judge Heath Barklay criticised Winslet’s “hedonistic” lifestyle, and said: “In August 2020, you were hopelessly drug addicted, leading an aimless life, consuming drugs and hanging around with the wrong people.”
He continued: “Because of the money that you had won, there was no motivation on your part to work or do anything other than enjoy yourself. You had lots of money, so you could afford to buy large amounts of drugs, which you would use yourself and supply to your so-called friends from time to time.”

The Adelaide District Court heard how the plumber’s natural generosity meant he was considered a “free ride” and how he would supply illegal drugs to a crowd of “undesirable people” who would then “run amok” in the 27-year-old’s home. Mr Edwardson said his Winslet had experienced a “wake up call” after learning he could do time for his actions.
The judge sentenced Joshua Winslet to three years and nine months in prison, which was later reduced to a two-year good behaviour bond. However, the 27-year-old was warned that if he was found to be in breach of the bond he could return to prison to serve his full sentence.
