Rep. Liz Cheney said Wednesday that former President Donald Trump should have no role in the future of the Republican Party or the country.

The No. 3 House Republican denounced Trump after she was asked at a press conference if she thought it was appropriate for Trump to be speaking Sunday at the annual CPAC event.

“That’s up to CPAC. I’ve been clear on my views about President Trump and the extent to which following Jan. 6, I don’t believe that he should be playing a role in the future of the party or the country,” she said.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) offered a different view at the same press conference, saying, “Yes, he should” be speaking at the conservative summit.

Cheney (R-Wyo.) was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, which disrupted certification of President Biden’s victory. The Senate acquitted Trump in a 57-43 vote that fell short of two-thirds required for conviction.

Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, survived a leadership challenge from pro-Trump Republicans this month, keeping her chairmanship of the House Republican Conference in a 145-61 vote.

She and Trump clashed while he was in office, particularly on foreign policy. Cheney successfully pushed legislation to hamstring Trump’s efforts to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, Germany and South Korea.

In a speech to supporters before the Capitol riot, Trump singled out Cheney as a Republican who should be thrown out of office.

“We got to remember, in a year from now, you’re going to start working on Congress and we got to get rid of the weak congresspeople, the ones that aren’t any good, the Liz Cheneys of the world,” Trump told supporters.

“We got to get rid of them. We got to get rid — you know, she never wants a soldier brought home. I brought a lot of our soldiers home.”

Trump’s office did not immediately comment on Cheney’s remarks.
