Iraq displays stolen artifacts recovered from UK, Sweden

Iraqi officials are displaying stolen artifacts from the country’s rich cultural heritage that were recently recovered from Britain and Sweden.

Many archaeological treasures from Iraq, home of the ancient “fertile crescent” considered the cradle of civilization, were looted during the chaos that followed the 2003 U.S. invasion and whisked out of the country.

Now Iraq is making a massive effort to bring these pieces home, working closely with the U.N. cultural organization.

The artifacts on display Monday at the foreign ministry in Baghdad include archaeological and historical items, such as pottery fragments and shards with writing dating back at least 4,000 years to the ancient Sumerian civilization.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim said his country is determined to recover its lost heritage, whatever it takes.

13-year-old Texas boy dies in accidental shooting

JASPER, Texas (AP) — Authorities say a 13-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed when two or three children were playing with a gun they found at a home in eastern Texas.

The Beaumont Enterprise reports that County Sheriff Mitchel Newman says Nick McBride died at a hospital in Beaumont Saturday night.

Newman says Nick was shot in the head at a house near Jasper, about 110 miles (180 kilometers) northeast of Houston.

It’s unclear if Nick was one of the children who were playing with the gun.

Newman says the shooting is under investigation, but all signs indicate it was an accident.

Jasper Police Sgt. Cody Christopher says he encourages all firearm owners to use gun locks, which are provided for free by the police department.

Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ overtakes ‘One Sweet Day,’ sets new record for most weeks at No.1

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s one sweet day for Lil Nas X: The breakthrough rapper’s viral “Old Town Road” has broken the Billboard record set by Mariah Carey’s “One Sweet Day” for most weeks at No. 1.

Lil Nas X accomplishes the feat this week as his country-trap song spends its 17th week on top of the Hot 100 chart. Carey and Boyz II Men’s duet set the record in 1996, and the only song to come close to breaking it was the ubiquitous international hit “Despacito,” which tied the 16-week record in 2017.

“Old Town Road” was originally a solo song, but the song also has remix versions featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, Diplo, Young Thug, Mason Ramsey and BTS. Billboard counts the original song and its remixes as one when calculating chart position.
