Knifeman attacks three police officers leaving them all in hospital after ‘smashing up cars with a metal pole’ outside tower block

  • Incident happened around 4.25am on Saturday in Harpurhey, Manchester
  • It is understood a policewoman first attempted to tackle the man and tase him
  • Her male colleague then tried to step in and help but was slashed with a knife 
  • A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage

Three police officers were taken to hospital after being attacked by a man armed with a knife in Harpurhey.

The shocking incident happened at around 4.25am on Saturday at Kingsbridge Court on Kingsbridge Road when police were called to reports of a man ‘causing a disturbance’.

The offender was said to be outside the tower block smashing up cars with a metal pole and in possession of a knife.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said three officers were injured and required treatment in hospital, including one male officer believed to have been stabbed.

It is understood a woman police officer first attempted to tackle the man and deployed her Taser.

A male colleague then tried to step in and help and was slashed. A third was also injured during the attempts to arrest the man before he was brought under control.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage.

Harpurhey councillor Pat Karney said: ‘All of Harpurhey will be shocked to hear of this disgusting attack.

‘I hope the officers recover soon,’ adding ‘We will work closely with the police to bring this cowardly attacker to justice.’

A spokesperson for GMP said: ‘Shortly before 4.25am on Saturday 15 August 2020, police were called to Kingsbridge Court on Kingsbridge Road to reports of a man causing a disturbance, smashing up cars with a metal pole and in possession of a knife.

‘In detaining the man, three officers were injured and received treatment at hospital, with one male officer sustaining injuries believed to have been caused by a knife.

‘The man – aged 24 – was tasered and subsequently detained. He is under arrest on suspicion of assault and criminal damage. 

‘He is currently being treated in hospital for minor injuries. In detaining the man, three officers received treatment at hospital, with one male officer sustaining injuries believed to have been caused by a knife.’
