KFC staff have been accused of picking their noses and not wear face masks while serving customers.

Workers at a branch in Cornwall were spotted breaking strict government guidelines aimed at reducing the spread of Covid-19.

Under the new coronavirus rules, staff at food outlets must face coverings – including masks or visors – unless the employee is exempt.

But one customer said she was shocked to see employees blatantly flouting the rules, CornwallLive reports.

However, customer Charlotte, who did not want her surname published, said that when she entered a KFC store in Camborne on March 10 – she was shocked to see these guidelines seemingly ignored.

Charlotte, who asked for her surname to be withheld, said it was "disgusting" to see not only one member of staff "digging for gold", but also the alleged lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) on all six staff members on the day.

“It needs airing that big companies are just not enforcing health and safety,” Charlotte said. "Their staff member had a finger so far up their nose they’re either digging for gold or just demonstrating how 'finger picking good' the meals should be.

"But no thanks, with Covid numbers up and being spread so easily via nose and mouth, they can keep their pickings.

"It's not good to see."

In photos Charlotte took, two other staff members in front of the Perspex screens are seen without masks. They are standing in front of a third worker who appears to be picking their nose, while manning the till behind the screen.

After airing her concerns to KFC's customer service, Charlotte said she was offered a partial refund to her £22 order, and told the company ensures all "guest-facing" staff wear masks.

A follow-up email read: "We are following government guidelines and I have raised this issue with the store directly. This will be internally investigated."

She added: "Especially in these Covid strict times, it’s disgusting to see a company so against enforcing staff are wearing PPE. I mean, come on."

The company also told her that KFC provides face masks for staff members who do not have them.

A KFC spokesperson said: "Running our restaurants responsibly is our top priority and all the measures that we introduced last year – whether it’s Perspex screens, PPE, gloves, social distancing increased hand washing and sanitising policies – remain firmly in place.

"All our measures adhere to government policies, including guidelines on face masks, and we are making sure we continue to follow all necessary steps to maintain a safe, clean environment for both our teams and fans."
