A 15-YEAR-old boy was shot on his way to school today – as kids "ran home in terror".

A teenager has been arrested after the Year 11 pupil was shot in Kesgrave near Ipswich just before 9am this morning, Suffolk Police confirmed.

The victim was seriously injured and airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital where he is receiving urgent medical attention.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Jones said: “We have now made an arrest as part of the investigation and are working with our partners in Suffolk and our schools to ensure that everyone feels safe when they are collecting their children from school this afternoon."

A mum said her daughter and other kids ran home in terror after hearing gunfire and a woman screaming "run, someone has been shot".

Kesgrave High School's Headteacher, Julia Upton, this morning sent a message to parents saying: “We have been made aware by the police that there has been a serious incident involving one of our Year 11 students on their way to school.

SCHOOL REMAINS OPEN

"Students in school are safe and we are managing the situation in constant close communication with the police.

"Students are to remain in school, and will be kept safe in liaison with police.

“Police will be present in the area and around the school throughout the school day. At the present time we are expecting students to be dismissed at the end of the school, day at 3.20pm as normal.”

The school confirmed to The Sun it remained open at this time, but could not give more information. 

Paramedics were seen treating a person on a stretcher as police told residents in Kesgrave to stay in their homes.

An air ambulance took off from the scene just before 10am after police sealed off surrounding roads and said they were dealing with a "major incident" in the town.

I had four terrified children come running back to mine. There are now at least four police cars lined up outside the road involved.

In the aftermath, a mum wrote on Facebook: "Something major has happened on Grange Farm. My daughter and friends were walking to school and heard what sounded exactly like a gunshot.

"Then lots of people screaming and a lady saying 'run, someone has been shot'.

"I had four terrified children come running back to mine. There are now at least four police cars lined up outside the road involved. Stay safe eveyone."

Other parents reported that the schools and a nursery had been locked down.

One wrote: "They have taken the nursery ones upstairs away from ground floor windows, I panicked and rang them to check".

'GUNSHOT AND SCREAMS'

Another local, who lives at the scene of the shooting, said he heard gunshots and screams.

He said: "I heard the sound of the gunshot, I thought someone had dropped a paving slab or something.

"I heard the screams so I ran outside to see if I could go help. When the ambulance and police arrived I was asked to get back so they could get on with their job."

Another wrote on Twitter: "I feel so sad about the Kesgrave shooting. My nephew is in that year at that school.

"Thankfully he is ok, but someone’s child is not."

One parent, Paul Leggett, described the incident as "sickening".

He said: "My little 4 year old boy went to school for his first proper day in #Kesgrave today. Heart go out to to all the local kids and families affected by this morning's terrible news.

"It shouldn't happen. Sickening."

Cops were called to the scene at 8.40am this morning after reports of a shooting in Grange Farm.

Two roads were completely closed off, with officers urging locals to stay away.

A police spokesman said: "Members of the public are asked to avoid these areas.

"Any witnesses, or anyone with information about this incident, is asked to contact Suffolk Police."
