Kate Middleton will miss out on planned engagements to mark the NHS's 73rd birthday because she is self-isolating due to a Covid-19 contact.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who has received both vaccinations, was alerted on Friday and began isolating then.

Kate had been due to celebrate the anniversary of the NHS at a service of thanksgiving before hosting a royal tea at Buckingham Palace.

The service at St Paul's Cathedral will celebrate the NHS's contribution to the country during Covid-19, reflecting on the work and achievement of health staff, volunteers and carers.

Kate was due to join husband Prince William and guests including leading figures in the NHS pandemic response, several hundred members of frontline staff, and patients.

The 39-year-old has since tested negative after being alerted about the Covid-19 contact.

Kate also had two lateral flow tests which returned negative results before attending the Euro 2020 clash at Wembley between England and Germany.

A Kensington Palace source said she was "sad" to miss the events today on the 73rd anniversary of the NHS.

William will still be attending both of the events on Monday as government guidelines do not require contacts of contacts to self-isolate. His wife is required to isolate for 10 days.

A spokesperson said: "Last week The Duchess of Cambridge came into contact with someone who has subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

"Her Royal Highness is not experiencing any symptoms, but is following all relevant government guidelines and is self-isolating at home."

Kate also made a public appearance at Wembley on Friday before she received the news about the Covid-19 contact.

Kensington Palace said she followed the rules throughout Wimbledon about when to wear a mask.

William and Prince Charles are believed to have contracted Covid towards the start of the pandemic.
