‘Just crazy’ Major US city to ban e-cigarettes – but you’ll still be able to buy cannabis

“This is groundbreaking legislation”

It comes after the city voted to bring an end to their sale that will effectively stop shops from selling vapes.

The ban also extends to online outlets, which will be prevented from shipping goods to homes in San Francisco.

Mayor London Breed will sign the bill into law – which is due to land on her desk in the next few days.

It will then take effect seven months later.

The ban will be a major blow to the US’s most-popular e-cigarette brand, Juul – that also has its headquarters in the city.

But, the company is preparing a fightback and claims it has collected enough signatures that will lobby to effectively bring an end to the ban.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who co-sponsored the bill to ban e-cigarette sales said: “We’ve seen a tremendous increase in the use of e-cigarettes, which have led to increased rates of nicotine addiction among young people.

“I don’t think San Francisco is any different from any other city. This is groundbreaking legislation that shows local governments are prepared to step up.”

While the ban on sales will be enforced, there is nothing to stop people aged 21 and above from using vapes.

Residents will also be able to buy other tobacco products, including cannabis.

The drug has been legal in California since 2016 after a bill to allow it to be sold in the state was passed carrying a majority of 57%.

Some people took to Twitter to blast the city’s decision to ban e-cigarettes, but continue allowing the sale of cannabis.

One said: “Ban e-cigarettes and continue to allow public drug use. Morons.”

Another added: “So, in San Francisco, I can order cannabis legally. Yet the local authority has passed legislation to ban e-cigarettes. Crazy, just crazy.”
