The cyberattack is expected to happen in the next fortnight. This week Frank Figliuzzi, former FBI assistant director said: “Biden will do something in the next few weeks that Trump never could, preparing for retaliation against Russia.” Washington is reportedly carrying through with the cyber action in retaliation for the Solar-Winds hack.

This hack saw a large-scale infiltration of US government agencies and corporations.

The hack was detected late in 2020 and was traced back to Moscow.

The planned cyberattack comes after President Biden this week called Russian president Vladimir Putin a “killer”.

Mr Biden also attacked China for its human rights abuses.

The US said that its cyber attack will not target Russian civilian structures or networks.

However, the hack is designed as a challenge to Mr Putin and his cyberespionage efforts.

The US said it would take “a mix of actions”, both “seen and unseen” when conducting its cyber attack.

This aggressive stance marks a different tack than those taken by previous administrations.

Donald Trump’s administration took a more cautious approach to Russia.

Mr Trump was always careful to not criticise Mr Putin and even praised the Russian leader at times.

Jake Sullivan, US national security adviser, speaking to The New York Times this week said: “I believe that a set of measures that are understood by the Russians, but may not be visible to the broader world, are likely to be the most effective measures in terms of clarifying what the United States believes are in bounds and out of bounds, and what we are prepared to do in response.”

Mr Sullivan added that traditional sanctions were not sufficient enough to challenge powers such as Russia, or China.

A senior Russian government source said the expected the cyberattacks would come in the form of a “large-scale information campaign”.

The source said the US would aim to discredit its coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik V.
