James ‘Radio’ Kennedy dead – Inspiration for Cuba Gooding Jr movie Radio dies aged 73 – The Sun
HIGH school football legend "Radio" Kennedy has died aged 73 after a long illness.
Kennedy, who had severe learning disabilities, inspired the iconic 2003 film that traced his heartwarming friendship with his local team in South Carolina.
His nickname was inspired by his trusty radio – Kennedy was rarely seen without his rusty transistor.
Radio's story of hope and friendship gained national attention in 1996, when Sports Illustrated ran a story about him and the football coach, Harold Jones.
The story highlighted how the town of Anderson, South Carolina accepted him and fostered him, and triggered the 2003 movie, where he was played by Cuba Gooding Jr.
Devastated Jones confirmed Radio's death, paying tribute to his old friend.
"He was just a fine man," he said.
"We all loved him. We will miss him incredibly."
