Jacob Rees-Mogg pokes fun at himself with Poundland gag after string of memes of him lounging on Commons benches – The Sun

JACOB Rees-Mogg has responded to a string of internet memes poking fun at him for lying across the front bench of the House of Commons.

The MP drew both laughter and criticism this week after being pictured reclining in front of the dispatch box with his eyes closed.

The pictures sparked a flurry of online memes showing Rees-Mogg in a host of weird and wonderful situations.

Among them was tweeted by Poundland, who used the trend to advertise their current range of bedding to students.

The budget chain posted a picture of the MP photoshopped onto a bed and captioned: "For £5, we could have tucked @Jacob_Rees_Mogg in for the night with our back to uni bedding #brexitmehole #thinkofengland."

Rees-Mogg retweeted the image and wrote: "My advisers have insisted that I come up with a recline to take."

Other memes showed the MP, recently made Leader of the Commons, in even stranger poses.

One showed his head imposed onto the reclining figure of Adam in Michelangelo's masterpiece Creation of Adam, while another showed showed him holiday a teddy and wearing a cloth nightcap.

A third showed him lying across a sofa in the living room of the Simpsons family, shown in the cartoon's famous opening credits.

He was also seen mid-flight going over a high jump, lying on a rose-strewn bed waiting for a lover to come home, and in a pool perching on an inflatable flamingo.

The photo was taken as Rees-Mogg listened to a debate in the Commons about the future of Brexit on Monday.

The debate was followed by a crucial vote in which a coalition of MPs from across parliament voted to take control of Commons business.

Labour's Anna Turley said Rees-Mogg was the "physical embodiment of arrogance, entitlement, disrespect and contempt for our parliament".

Caroline Lucas, former leader of the Green Party, described his body language as contemptuous.
