Innocent bystander was caught in fatal gunfire in East Harlem: cops

An innocent bystander caught in fatal gunfire in East Harlem was identified as a 43-year-old Brooklyn man, police said Sunday.

Purcell Gowie was struck by a stray bullet in front of 228 East 116th St. in Manhattan on Feb. 12 around 6:30 p.m. during a brawl that apparently broke out between two groups of teenagers, police sources said.

Gowie was walking past the group when he was shot once in the chest, police said.

He was taken to Harlem Hospital where he died.

”There are no words for this. A beautiful life was taken,” a longtime friend of Gowie’s, Paul Mayers, told The Post –– who added that it was unlike Gowie to get into trouble.

“That wasn’t him. He wasn’t like that,” he said.

Police are looking for a suspect between 18 and 25 years old last seen wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, and black-and-white sneakers.
