A man has been handed an extra 25 years in prison after slaying his cellmate who had raped his little sister.

Shane Goldsby was already serving time after being involved in a police chase in 2017 when he was put in the same cell as Robert Munger who was jailed for 43 years for sex offences.

Goldsby, 26, reportedly felt 'deeply uneasy' at sharing the cell with the paedophile and he eventually snapped after Munger allegedly bragged about his horrific crimes.

Goldsby beat the 70-year-old unconscious after attacking him from behind, with CCTV capturing the attack on camera at Airway Heights Corrections Center in Washington in 2020.

Munger died from his injuries three days later.

Goldsby attempted to read out a statement in court before becoming too emotional to finish and asked his lawyer to read it out for him.

He apologised to Munger's family, and said: "I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose a loved one in this kind of way.

"To his wife and his whole family, I apologise. I am so sorry and I hope you are able to heal from what I caused."

Goldsby added he never intended to kill Munger and would have preferred to see the convicted sex offender behind bars for the rest of his life.

Goldbsy was convicted of murder.

Investigators discovered the Washington Department of Corrections was unaware of the link between the two inmates – something systems should have flagged before they were put in a cell together, it has said.

Last year, Goldsby told KHQ he had even requested to move cells but his request was denied.

He said: "I had so much stuff going on in my head. I wasn't stable at that point. I wasn't.

"I was getting to that point, because [Munger] kept wanting to give me details about what happened, what he did – about the photos and the videos of him doing this stuff. It was building up.

"I was questioning things on what was going on, 'Why is all this going on?' But as I said, I gave my life to God in 2019. I quit gangbanging. I was doing good.

"You put me in the same cell as this dude. I feel set up. I'm the victim."

A review of the incident and an administrative investigation is currently underway.
