Ingenious cop saves stab victim’s life with crisp packet and some sticky tape

A New York cop used an ingenious “MacGyver” solution to save the life of a young man who had been stabbed in the city’s streets.

With just a crisp packet and some sticky tape Officer Ronald Kennedy sealed up a life-threatening wound in the 29-year-old stab victim’s chest.

His boss, NYPD Chief of Department Rodney Harrison, proudly posted Officer Kennedy’s body cam video of the life-saving manoeuvre onto Twitter.

As soon as the team of police officers arrived on the scene at Lenox Avenue and 125th Street in Harlem, Officer Kennedy took charge and shouted to a bystander “Go get me a bag of potato chips, right now!”

Then Officer Kennedy commanded two other onlookers to help him turn the man over, saying“Two people, over here, right now!” Officer Harrison commanded. “Lay him down! Help me lay him down!”

Then, removing the man’s blood-soaked shirt, Officer Kennedy set to work. He took out his knife and cut the crisp packet into a makeshift dressing.

The victim, bleeding heavily, told his rescuer “They caught me in my lung.”

As Officer Harrison worked to save the young man’s life, he kept up a steady stream of encouragement, saying “We got you, we got you, don’t touch!” and “Stay with me, stay with me!”

He reminded the stricken lad to “keep breathing, bro!” as paramedics rushed in to put the victim on a stretcher to take him to Harlem Hospital

Police officials said the victim survived, and was last listed as being in “critical" condition.

Eric Rodriguez, 38, was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of weapon, police said.

Chief Rodney Harrison said the life-saving intervention, which took place on July 7, was “just one example of the heroic work that your NYPD officers do every day”.

He included a note from one of the doctors who treated the victim that said Officer Kennedy’s prompt actions had saved the man’s life.
