An "illiterate criminal" has been mocked by police for scrawling "Bataman" on a stolen car.

Cops nicknamed Batman and Robin say they now have "a clue" who was behind the error in South Derbyshire.

Officers found the silver car dangerously parked in Newhall with the caped crusader's name misspelt in black spray paint across the side of the vehicle.

Two of the officers from the unit are nicknamed Batman and Robin by the team, which is part of Derbyshire Police.

A spokesman from the Swadlincote Police Safer Neighbourhood Team said they have "a clue" to who the criminal is, Staffordshire Live reports.

Officers also dealt with dangerous parking on Main Street, Newhall, on Saturday, March 27, as it was forcing other road users to contravene a solid white line system in a bid to get past the vehicles.

It is not the first time the owners of the vehicles had been issued with words of advice from the police, so this time they were handed tickets, which resulted in fines and points on their licence.

A spokesman for the unit said: "Bataman? Batman.

"We have a clue who the illiterate criminal is as he cannot seem to spell Batman.

"We will continue to action your requests in the coming weeks.

"Keep letting us know where we are needed."

Last month, two teenagers were told to clean up their act and a police van after they chucked mud at it.

The balaclava-wearing 16-year-olds tried to leg it after throwing mud at the passing cop van on February 21, but they were caught.

The Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team, in County Durham, decided to punish the troublemakers by getting them to spend Thursday afternoon, February 25, scrubbing police vehicles.

Inspector Emma Kay, of Peterlee Neighbourhood Police Team, said the boys' parents were "very supportive" and gave them toothbrushes to make sure every vehicle was "gleaming".

She added: "The consequences of throwing things at moving vehicles can be far more serious than these two realise, which I’m sure they’ve had time to consider while washing the cars.
