A man killed his wife merely hours after their wedding reception and stuffed her corpse into a suitcase, prosecutors claim.

Dawn Walker's body was found in a field just four days after she wed Thomas Nutt, who is now being tried for her murder at Bradford crown court.

The 52-year-old grandmother enjoyed a wedding reception at The Prince Albert pub in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, but had not been seen alive afterwards.

CCTV later captured Nutt, 45, wheeling a large suitcase from the back of his home to some nearby bushes, prompting police to knock on his door and investigate.

Nutt, 45, had called police on October 31, 2021, to report his wife missing from their home in Lightcliffe, near Halifax, prosecutor Alistair MacDonald told the court.

However, he added, Nutt already knew when he made the call that her body was lying dead in a cupboard at the property.

"He knew she was there because he killed her and put her body there before stuffing it into a suitcase, breaking bones to achieve that objective, before wheeling it to a place at which he dumped her body," Mr MacDonald told the jury.

Nutt then told police the couple had honeymooned in a caravan in Skegness after the October 27 ceremony, which took place at Brighouse Register Office.

He then claimed the couple had come back from their trip but that Ms Walker, who suffered from depression and bipolar disorder, had demanded a divorce upon their return.

Nutt had told detectives: "She put me in jail before, said I had tried raping and assaulting her.

"She said she was going to do it again. She started screaming and I have hit her in the face and put my arm round her neck."

Nutt denies murder but has pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis that he did not intend to cause Ms Walker really serious harm when he killed her.

However, Mr MacDonald told jurors the defendant was guilty of murder, and said Nutt had lied about Mrs Walker's presence on the honeymoon – claiming he killed her before going to Skegness by himself.

He alleged Nutt returned from the ill-fated honeymoon to tell Ms Walker's daughter her mother was missing and that he was carrying out a search for her.

Mr MacDonald said: "It is often said someone’s wedding day is one of the happiest times of their life. Sadly, this was not the case for Ms Walker."

The trial continues.
