Hurricane Dorian NOAA 8am update: Dorian nears major Category 3 hurricane status at 110mph
Hurricane Dorian is rapidly intensifying and is expected to become a major hurricane on Friday, NOAA warned in its latest advisory. It is currently whipping out winds of 110mph, making it a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. That means if Dorian’s winds increase by just one mile it will be a major Category 3 hurricane. A hurricane watch is in effect for northwestern Bahamas, who can expect hurricane conditions within the next 48 hours.
Bahamas can also be hit by life-threatening storm surge as Dorian continues to strengthen.
NOAA warned: Residents should begin to execute their hurricane plans and listen to advice given by local emergency officials.
The dangerous hurricane is forecast to make landfall in Florida late this weekend.
There is an increasing likelihood of a prolonged period of hazardous weather conditions that could last for a couple of days in parts of Florida early next week.
NOAA said: “The risk of life-threatening storm surge along portions of the Florida east coast has increased, although it is too soon to determine where the highest storm surge will occur.
“The risk of devastating hurricane-force winds along the Florida east coast and peninsula early next week has also increased, although it is too soon to determine where the strongest winds will occur.”
Dorian could be the most powerful hurricane to smash into the east coast of Florida since Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Hurricane Dorian is currently heading towards the Sunshine State as the strongest storm of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season, with wind gusts of 110mph.
Dorian is continuing to strengthen as it churns through the Atlantic Ocean, and according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it will develop into a major Category 3 hurricane on Friday.
Due to the hurricane’s projected path, Florida has been put under a state of emergency.
Every single one of the 67 counties in Florida is under a state of emergency as the state prepares for the horrifying effects of the storm.
With the hurricane nearing, the Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis sent a letter to US President Donald Trump, requesting pre-landfall declaration.
Mr DeSantis said: “With Hurricane Dorian strengthening, I have sent a letter to President Donald Trump requesting that he declare a pre-landfall disaster for all of Florida’s 67 counties.
“The trajectory of this storm remains uncertain, and this declaration will provide us with the necessary resources to ensure the state is fully prepared.
“I am confident the President will grant my request and show his full support for Florida.”
This declaration will provide important resources and assistance from the federal government, as well as free up funding sources for emergency protective measures.
