Hundreds of Gypsies and travellers return to the quaint Cotswold town of Stow-on-the-Wold for biannual horse fair festival after event was cancelled last year in pandemic

Gypsy and traveller communities from across the country met in sleepy Cotswold town Stow-on-the Wold today for its historic horse fair festival, the first in over a year because of the pandemic.
Hundreds of visitors attended the Stow Gypsy Horse Fair in Gloucestershire to see and trade the animals in accordance with a charter granted five hundred years ago.
But the recent bad weather in the area left conditions slippery as its main walkway was thick with mud.
The traveller community has been meeting in the town for the biannual event since 1476.
Both of last year’s events, traditionally held in May and October, were cancelled because of Covid.
Despite its roots in history, the event is unpopular with many locals and businesses sometimes close whilst it is on.
The next event is due to be held in October 2021.
