Hummus products recalled due to concerns over possible listeria contamination

A Houston-based hummus company has recalled several of its products following concerns over a possible listeria contamination.

On Monday, Pita Pal Foods issued a voluntary recall of hummus products made between May 30 and June 25, citing a possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a pathogenic bacteria that can lead to muscle pain and flu-like symptoms among young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. The FDA had reportedly discovered the contamination at the company’s manufacturing facility during an inspection.

“No illnesses have been reported to date for these products,” Pita Pal said in an announcement. “The company is issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution.”

Pita Pal said it distributed more than 75 recalled hummus products to the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates. It is now urging customers who have purchased the items to return them for a full refund.

In 2017, Tennessee-based company House of Thaller recalled 10-ounce batches of hummus following a similar listeria outbreak.
