A mystery 'explosion' heard from various areas across Liverpool could be caused by a sonic boom.

The huge bang was heard by people in Merseyside heard shortly after 9.15am today, (Tuesday, March 9).

One Twitter user wrote: "Did anyone hear that massive explosion then in Bootle", and another said: "Anyone hear that f*****g loud bang then or am I losing the plot?"

Residents say they heard the sound in Bootle, Aintree, Sefton and Clubmoore, which are around four miles apart.

A sonic boom occurs when an object – usually a jet – travels faster than the speed of sound and breaks the sound barrier.

A jet was seen flying over the area around the same time the bang was heard, according to flight-tracking website FlightRadar24.
