Huge 8,000-person nudist festival will go ahead this month despite Covid fears

A massive 8,000-person nudist festival will still go ahead later this month despite fears it could become a super-spreading event for the deadly coronavirus.

Since 2016, on the first weekend of February, Zipolite on the southern coast of Mexico has hosted Festival Nudista Zipolite, organised by the Federación Nudista de México.

Located in the coastal region of the state of Oaxaca, Zipolite, which means "Beach of the Dead", the beach is Mexico's first and only legal nude beach.

This year's festival is scheduled to take place from January 29 to February 1, despite the fact that Mexico has so far registered more than 1.48m coronavirus cases and over 130k Covid-related deaths. 13,345 further cases were registered on Wednesday, January 6.

Organisers of the sixth festival reported that the town of Zipolite has agreed to carry out the festival activities, as long as they are not massive and the necessary health protocols are met, infobae reports.

Benjamín Martínez López, representative of Bienes Comunales, reported that according to the organisers, service providers, and the Health Secretariat of San Pedro Pochutla, the conditions do exist to carry out the event.

He argued that the town should seek to recover part of the economic losses left by the Covid-19 pandemic, as long as the festival can guarantee the health of visitors.

The promotional items for the Zipolite Nudist Festival 2021 invite the public to respect sanitary measures, such as the use of face masks and respect the healthy distance to avoid crowds.

"If you have airline and hotel reservations, bring your masks and sanitising items with you or if you still don't have reservations, we invite you to stay home," the promotional messages read.
