He’s the face of one of Britain’s most memorable ad campaigns, famous for his catchphrase ‘Who gives you extra?’

And now Howard from the Halifax is back – and he’s less than happy about his old employer’s conduct in a row over the bank’s pronoun badges. 

Howard Brown, 55, was working at a branch in Birmingham when he was chosen to sing and dance in a series of TV adverts that propelled him to stardom 22 years ago. 

The Halifax culture wars row began this week when the bank said it would allow staff to display their pronouns on their name badges.

When customers expressed their opposition to the policy, an employee in charge of the account told one of them they were ‘welcome to close your account’. 

Mr Brown said: ‘I think it’s disgraceful. It’s a service industry – you should leave politics to the politicians. They’ve got this one wrong.’
