  • One person has died after a massive multi-story car park collapsed in New York, United States.

Moments after 4pm on Tuesday (April 18) the parking garage, in Manhattan’s Finacial District, collapsed causing chaos and panic.

Six workers were in its upper levels at the time of the incident.

All have since been accounted for by emergency responders with one dead and four put in the hospital. The sixth refused to be seen by medics.

Rescuers deployed a robotic dog at the scene to assist with the recovery effort.

City Councilmember Christopher Marte said: “Almost every single floor has collapsed, even the use of a robot dog couldn’t go to every part of the building and someone was trapped inside of it”.

The Mayor of New York, Eric Adams, said in a tweet: “Sadly, we did lose one life. While we continue to search the site, at this time we are hopeful that there are no other people trapped in the structure.

“While we are grateful for the amazing work of our first responders, including the innovative technology they used as part of rescue efforts, the work won’t end tonight. An investigation into how this happened is under way. We will get answers.”

The cause of the collapse remains to be concluded by investigators, however, a number of factors including the building’s age and the number of cars parked on the roof are thought to be involved.

    1. A shaken neighbour of the collapse told the New York Post: “Bricks were coming through. The place was filling up with dirt … part of my wall is gone now.”
