A passenger held their nerve to take the video that showed the Aeroflot Superjet-100’s engine as it was ripped apart by flames.
Harrowing screams could be heard in the short clip as the plane made its emergency landing at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport.
Russian officials said on Sunday that 41 people – including children – had been killed in the disaster.
Images taken from outside the aircraft showed survivors escaping the plane down an emergency slide near the front of the plane.
The SU1492 flight was on its way to Murmansk, in the country’s most northwesterly county, from the Russian capital before it declared an emergency shortly after takeoff and returned to the airport.
It had only been in the air for 27 minutes. There were 78 passengers onboard the flight.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation said: “Soon, investigators will begin interviewing victims, eyewitnesses, airport staff and the airline carrier, as well as other persons responsible for the operation of the aircraft.
“Required technical documentation will be examined.”
Local media has said some injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals.
Rescue teams also searched the wreckage for more survivors.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and ordered investigators to establish what caused the deadly blaze.
