A 21-YEAR-OLD man set himself on fire and chased his girlfriend down the street during an argument with her.

The horrific incident took place outside a house in Kampung Bintang in the north-western Malaysian state of Perak at around 7.40pm on Monday and was filmed by a nearby CCTV camera.

In the footage, too graphic to publish, the unnamed man is seen arguing with a woman as she tries to take something from his hand, possibly a cigarette lighter.

However, as they tussle the man suddenly erupts in flames after presumably dousing himself in flammable liquid beforehand.

The woman runs away in shock as the flaming man falls to the ground.

He then gets to his feet and chases after the woman while completely on fire.

The 21-year-old runs back through the gate and crouches down by a wall before lying on the ground.

Meanwhile, the woman rushes back and picks up a bucket of water which she throws over her smouldering boyfriend.

Still alight and smoking, the man cowers by the wall as several people rush about, apparently trying to fetch more water.

According to local media, the young man suffered burns to 90 per cent of his body.

Police said that he set himself alight because of an intense row with his partner.

A police spokesperson told local media: “The victim is receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit at the Seri Manjung Hospital.”

The case is currently being investigated as an attempted suicide.
