Dumbo to unveil new ‘Welcome’ sign
Just in time for Halloween, Dumbo is going to “welcome” you with a new waterfront sign on what is now known as the Panorama project.
The former Watchtower-owned buildings had eponymous signage removed from the 30 Columbia Heights building in 2017, as The Post reported. That red Watchtower sign replaced an earlier ER Squibb & Sons sign, and thus was not subject to landmarking.
According to developers CIM and LIVWRK, the new word on the skyline is to remind travelers and businesses that Brooklyn welcomes businesses.
“We wanted our renovation to celebrate Panorama becoming an accessible and vital part of the new fabric of the Brooklyn waterfront,” said Jason Schreiber, principal, Investments, CIM Group, co-owner, co-developer of Panorama.
China working on plans to replace Hong Kong’s leader: report
China is preparing plans to replace embattled Hong Kong administrator Carrie Lam, the Financial Times reported Tuesday. Lam’s government has faced months of protests and massive demonstrations calling for democratic reforms and her resignation. The FT said Lam’s replacement could be installed by March and serve out the rest of her five-year term, until 2022. Chinese officials don’t want to be seen as caving to protesters, so they are waiting for the situation to stabilize before making the change, the report said.
EU’s Tusk will recommend granting Brexit extension
LONDON — European Council President Donald Tusk says he will recommend that the EU grant Britain’s request for an extension to the Oct. 31 Brexit deadline.
Tusk tweeted Tuesday that he will urge the other 27 EU nations to approve Britain’s delay.
Britain has sought a three-month delay until the end of January 2020. That was done after Parliament passed a law forcing Prime Minister Boris Johnson to seek the delay.
Without elaborating, Tusk said he will propose a written procedure for the delay.
Paramount Group’s 900 Third Ave. could go for over $400M
A new trophy-office offering is hitting the market and could sell for in excess of $400 million.
Materials are circulating for the sale of 900 Third Ave., between East 54th and 55th streets, where a large outside glass-covered atrium near the top of the 36-story tower could be transformed into building amenity space.
The Paramount Group ownership has hired the Cushman & Wakefield investment sales team of Adam Spies, Douglas Harmon, Adam Doneger, Kevin Donner, Joshua King and Marcella Fasulo to market the 597,986-square-foot glass-and-steel tower.
Cesar Pelli designed the 1985-era building, which is about 80 percent occupied. The vacancy plus under-market leases provide an opportunity for a “value-add” buyer that likes to work on and upgrade assets.
The brokers did not return requests for comment prior to press time.
‘EVALI’ Is The New Name Given To Vaping-related Lung Illness
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC has given the name ‘EVALI’ for lung injuries caused by the use of e-cigarette, or vaping products. EVALI stands for ‘e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury’.
In its latest Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the agency said that as of October 8, 26 deaths have been reported from 21 states due to EVALI. Further, 1,299 cases of lung injury have been reported from 49 states, the District of Columbia, and one U.S. territory. Of these cases, majority were using THC-containing products.
In its update for the health care providers of patients with EVALI, the CDC urged that an increased understanding of treatment considerations could reduce morbidity and mortality associated with this injury.
CDC has issued a framework for health care providers in their initial assessment, evaluation, management, and follow-up of persons with symptoms of EVALI.
CDC, the Food and Drug Administration, various health departments, and other clinical and public health partners are investigating a multistate outbreak of EVALI in the United States.
A recent study by the NYU School of Medicine found that exposure to the smoke of e-cigarette with nicotine caused lung cancer in mice. E-cigarettes were introduced as safe alternatives to tobacco smoking.
George Springer set a record with his latest World Series home run
With a solo home run in the seventh inning of Game 1 on Tuesday night, Houston Astros outfielder George Springer set a record with a homer in his fifth consecutive World Series game.
Springer went deep in the last four games of the 2017 World Series as the Astros defeated the Dodgers in seven games. With those home runs, Springer tied Reggie Jackson and Lou Gehrig, who had homered in four consecutive games in the Fall Classic. Springer was named Most Valuable Player of the series in 2017.
"I told them in the dugout we need to play in the World Series more often because he hits homers every single time it feels like," said Astros manager A.J. Hinch.
Springer added an RBI double in the eighth inning, but the Astros' rally fell short in the 5-4 loss at Minute Maid Park.
Jackson and Gehrig's streaks also spanned multiple seasons, with Jackson homering in Games 4-6 of the 1977 World Series and then Game 1 in 1978. Gehrig homered in Games 2-4 of the 1928 World Series but had to wait until 1932 to hit a home run in the series opener.
Hong Kong says Taiwan obstructing murder suspect case for political reasons
HONG KONG (Reuters) – Taiwan authorities are obstructing the case of a murder suspect whose case led to mass street protests in Hong Kong, a Hong Kong government official said on Wednesday.
Secretary for Security John Lee was speaking hours after Chan Tong-kai walked free from jail as the city’s government squabbled with Taiwan over how to handle a promised voluntary surrender. Taiwan accuses Chan of murdering his girlfriend.
